GAO Report: Health Information Technology: Early Efforts Initiated but Comprehensive Privacy Approach Needed for National Strategy (GAO-07-238)

8-31-07
As health information technology (IT) initiatives expand and more electronic health information exchange networks emerge, how well is the privacy of individuals’ electronic health information protected? In April 2004, President Bush called for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop and implement a strategic plan to guide the nationwide implementation of health IT and recommends methods to ensure the privacy of electronic health information. This report, issued by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, evaluates relevant HHS privacy initiatives and analyzes information from health information organizations.
