Gillian R. Hayes, Ph.D.

Gillian Hayes is an assistant professor in informatics in the School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California at Irvine. Her research interests are in human-computer interaction, ubiquitous computing, assistive and educational technologies and medical informatics. Hayes is interested in the ways in which people keep records; document their everyday lives; and constitute their identities, clinical and educational categories, etc. through these records. She directs the Social and Technological Action Research (STAR) group at the University of California at Irvine.

Hayes is affiliated with the Laboratory for Ubiquitous Computing and Interaction, the Center for Ethnography, the Center for Biomedical Informatics, the Center for Research on Information Technology & Organizations, the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, and ACE program faculty.  She is an alumna of the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Karen G. Cheng-Ramos, Ph.D.

Karen Cheng-Ramos holds a doctorate in social psychology from the University of California at Los Angeles and is a senior research scientist at the University of California at Irvine. Her research focuses on culturally appropriate uses of information and communications technology (ICT) to improve delivery of health information and health services. Cheng-Ramos’ studies evaluate the impact of potential barriers on the acceptability of handheld computers, mobile phones, websites and other ICT in health care settings, particularly in low-income countries. Cheng-Ramos also works with local governmental organizations in sub-Saharan Africa to build capacity for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services.
