Personal Health Application for Diabetes Self-Management

Dr. Fonda leads several clinical research initiatives at Walter Reed's acclaimed Diabetes Institute. Dr. Fonda's current academic appointment is Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences.
She is the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to develop a user-centered, prototype personal health record application for people with diabetes. This innovative application captures information about daily living important for diabetes management and gives action-oriented advice for self-care.
For the past five years, Dr. Fonda has been an integral part of a Congressionally-funded, multidisciplinary research team that develops and tests Health Information Technology (HIT) solutions for both diabetes care coordination and patient self-management. As part of her work in this area, Dr. Fonda has authored several HIT articles in journals such at Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics and Telemedicine and e-Health. She was also a Blue Ribbon recipient for research presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Telemedicine Association.
Prior to relocating to the T.R.U.E. Research Foundation last year, Dr. Fonda spent four years at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, as an Assistant Research Investigator, and held faculty appointments at both the VA Boston Healthcare System and Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Fonda holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociology from Duke University. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging.
